The first Green Gym was established in 1997 and Green Gyms are now operating throughout the UK. The Green Gym has been subject to two evaluations by the Oxford Centre for Health Care Research and Development at Oxford Brookes University. These evaluations have shown that:-

1. Taking part in regular Green Gym sessions can improve cardiovascular fitness and therefore reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
2. The range of activities in the Green Gym allows participants to exercise at a level that suits their individual capabilities.
3. Participation in the Green Gym can improve muscular strength, increased strength can lead to improved balance, fewer falls and increased independence - benefits that are particularly important for older people.
4. The Green Gym conveys a range of social and mental health benefits. Working with others encourages participation in the local community. Learning a new skill successfully completing a task builds confidence and self-esteem.
5. Working out in the fresh air, in contact with nature, relieves stress and anxiety. All participants interviewed during the research reported this benefit.
6. The research showed that over 80% of participants had never previously taken part in any similar activity. The Green Gym engages people of all ages and backgrounds.
