Cycling is a great form of exercise, especially if you like being out
and about in the fresh air. It works the heart and lungs and tones the legs,
bottom and shoulders. You can cycle in a gym, at your local sports centre
or on quiet roads but remember if you are out on the roads:
Cycle in well lit areas
Cycle with a partner and ensure that you have adequate fluids
Always plan your route before you set off
Carry emergency tools and equipment.
Before you start cycling please make sure that your cycle is in good working order, particularly the brakes, steering and tyres. If you are going to ride in the dark your bike must have front and rear lights and a red reflector.
Please use cycle routes wherever they are available.
Wear suitable clothing - reflective clothing is helpful
If you are going to leave your bike unattended you will need a suitable lock to prevent it being stolen. If the wheels are easily detached you may need an extra lock or long cable to secure the wheels.
