Computer Project

This project which was set up to enable housebound older people to obtain the benefits of using a computer has been running for one year now. Over the last twelve months we have helped 36 people to learn how to use a computer. 31 of these are now connnected to the internet and enjoying emailing, skyping and shopping on line. 2 people decided that they could not manage a computer and 3 others had to postpone training due to health problems.

Many of the people we have helped say that we have made a big difference to their lives and are busy keeping in touch with friends and relatives on line. Some are researching information for family history and other projects.

Having internet access will help to relieve social isolation, give access to information and improve communication with friends and relatives. In a few years it is likely that contact with your GP will initially be over the internet which makes it very important that older people can use a computer.

We are able to offer the loan of a second-hand laptop computer, on a short-term basis, to people taking part. We have a number of volunteer mentors who will provide help to set up the computer and offer ongoing assistance and tuition when required. We plan to loan the computers for about six weeks to allow the housebound person to decide if the purchase of a computer will benefit them. Our tutors will help with setting up broadband and purchasing a computer.

We would like to hear from more housebound people, or their carers, who would like to take advantage of the scheme. For more information please phone Anne-Marie on 01952 211410.
